Privacy Policy
848combat is a reference site for mixed martial arts — fight cards, fighters, results, odds — with a community of members who post, pick and follow. This policy explains what personal data we collect when you use the site, why we collect it, who we share it with, how long we keep it and the choices you have. It is written to cover the site as it is and as it grows, so it says “may” where something is not in use yet; the date at the top tells you when it last changed.
Who we are and what this covers
848combat.com is operated by Guerrilla Syndicate Limited, a company registered in England and Wales under company number 17480806; 848combat is a trading name of Guerrilla Syndicate Limited (“848combat”, “we”, “us”). We are the data controller for the personal data described here, and our registered office is 128 City Road, London EC1V 2NX, United Kingdom. You can reach us at hello@848combat.com.
This policy covers the website, any subdomain, app, feed, email or other service we provide that links to it, and any account we run on another platform to the extent we control what is collected there. It does not cover the sites of bookmakers, promotions, advertisers or anyone else we link to: each has its own policy, and once you leave the site theirs applies, not ours.
What we collect
Most of the site can be read without an account, and an account asks for very little. What we hold reaches us in three ways: you give it to us, we collect it as you use the site, or someone else provides it.
What you give us.
- Your account — an email address, a username and a country. We sign you in with a one-time code sent to that address, so there is no password to store. If we add further profile fields later, whatever you choose to fill in is stored, and shown where the field is described as public.
- Your picture — if you pick one, it is a reference to one of the fighter portraits already on the site. You do not upload an image and we hold no photograph of you.
- What you do here — your comments, your votes on other comments, your fight picks and how sure you were, the members you follow, and anything else you post, react to or take part in, each with the time it happened.
- Your preferences — your answer to the email offers box, together with a record of when you answered, which wording you were shown and which country it was worded for, and each change you make to it; any other settings you choose.
- Your messages to us — when you write to us with a question, a report, a correction or a request, we keep the correspondence and whatever you attach to it.
- Competitions, surveys and promotions — what you submit when you enter one, under whatever rules it carries.
- Payments — nothing today, because nothing on the site is charged for. If we introduce paid features, a payment provider will handle your card or bank details under its own terms; we would keep the record of the transaction but never the full card number.
What we collect as you use the site.
- Technical information — your IP address, the type of device, operating system and browser you use, your language and screen size, the page that referred you, the pages and features you use, the links you click (including links to bookmakers, advertisers and other partners), when you did each of these things, and any errors that occurred.
- Where you are, roughly — the country your IP address belongs to and, in some countries, the state or province. We do not use GPS or ask your device for its location. It decides which odds, bookmakers and offers may lawfully be shown to you, the order dates are written in, the country suggested for you at signup (which you can change — an account stores the country you confirm), and it helps us keep the site secure and understand where readers come from.
- Cookies and similar technologies — described in their own section below.
- Server logs — the ordinary request logs every web server keeps, so that the site can be operated, faults found and abuse spotted.
What others give us.
- Our service providers — for example, whether an email we sent you was delivered, bounced, opened or clicked, and signals that a request came from an automated tool rather than a person.
- Partners, advertisers and affiliate networks — when a link from our site leads to a sign-up, a deposit, a bet or a purchase with a partner, the partner or the network that runs its affiliate programme may tell us so that we can be paid, normally against a click reference rather than your name, along with the value of any commission. Advertising networks may report in the same way whether an advert led to anything.
- Other members and the public — reports about something you posted, and information that is already public where the law lets us use it.
- Sign-in providers — if we add sign-in through another service, that service gives us the details you allow it to share, such as your name and email address.
How we use it
We use personal data to:
- run the site and your account — sign you in, show your profile and what you post, let members follow each other, and remember your settings;
- send you messages about your account and the service — login codes, security notices, and notice of changes to these pages;
- send you email offers and news, where you have agreed to them (see “Email and other messages”);
- show you what is appropriate where you are — odds, bookmakers and offers that are lawful there, dates in the order you are used to, and content we are allowed to show in your country;
- measure and improve the site — which pages are read, which features are used, how fast pages load, and how changes we try out perform;
- run advertising, affiliate and sponsorship arrangements — attribute a sign-up or purchase to a link from us, be paid for it, measure campaigns, limit how often you see the same thing, and show offers more likely to interest you;
- personalise what you see — order comments, remember your preferences, and suggest fighters, cards or offers based on what you use;
- keep the site and its members safe — detect and prevent fraud, abuse, spam, vote manipulation, automated traffic and attempts to break in, and enforce the limits on accounts and posting;
- moderate — handle reports, review content, and act on the Terms of Use;
- meet our legal obligations, respond to lawful requests from authorities, and establish, exercise or defend legal claims;
- run competitions, surveys and promotions we offer;
- produce statistics and research in a form that does not identify you;
- run the business — audits, accounting, insurance, financing, and any sale or reorganisation of it.
Our legal grounds
If you are in the United Kingdom, the European Economic Area or Nigeria, the law asks us to say which ground we rely on for each use. They are:
- Performing our agreement with you — what running your account requires, under the Terms of Use.
- Our legitimate interests — operating, securing and improving the site; understanding how it is used; showing lawful odds, offers and advertising and being paid for referrals; moderating and enforcing our terms; and running the business. We rely on this only where our interest is not outweighed by yours, and you may object (see “Your rights and choices”).
- Your consent — for email offers, for cookies and similar technologies that are not strictly necessary, and for anything else we ask you about first. You can withdraw consent at any time, which does not affect what was done before you withdrew it.
- Complying with the law — where we must keep, use or disclose data because a law requires it.
Data about fighters, officials and other people in the public eye is handled on a different footing, described under “Fighters and other people in the public eye”.
Cookies and similar technologies
A cookie is a small file a site stores in your browser; similar technologies include local storage, tracking pixels in pages and emails, tracking parameters added to links, and the identifiers an app is given on a device. We use them, and so do some of the partners whose content and links appear here. They fall into these groups:
- Strictly necessary — the ones the site cannot work without: signing you in and keeping you signed in, protecting the site and your account from abuse, spreading load, and remembering the choices you make on this page or a cookie control. These do not need your consent; blocking them will stop you signing in.
- Preferences — things you have chosen, such as the odds notation in the top bar, a country or region, an age you have confirmed, or how you like a page laid out. Some of these are kept only in your browser and never sent to us.
- Analytics and performance — which pages are visited, how readers move through the site, how it performs and which version of a change worked better. These may be our own or an analytics provider’s.
- Advertising, affiliate and partner — cookies and link parameters that let us, an advertising network, an affiliate network or a partner recognise that you came from our site, attribute what you did next to that visit, measure whether an advert or a link worked, limit how often you see the same thing and show offers relevant to you. Some of these are set on a partner’s site after you click through to it, and belong to the partner and its networks rather than to us. Where these technologies follow you across sites they are what some laws call cross-site tracking, targeted advertising or the “sharing” of personal information.
- Embedded content — if a page embeds a video, a post from a social platform or another service, that service may set its own cookies and collect data as if you had visited it directly.
Today the cookies we set ourselves are the strictly necessary ones. As the site grows we expect to add analytics, advertising and affiliate technologies; when we do, this section will describe them and, where the law where you are requires it, we will ask for your consent before setting anything that is not strictly necessary and give you a way to change your mind. You can also control or delete cookies through your browser’s settings, though deleting ours will sign you out. Where the law requires it we treat a Global Privacy Control signal from your browser as an opt-out of sale, sharing and targeted advertising.
Odds, bookmakers, affiliate links and advertising
The site shows bookmakers’ odds and, where the bookmakers we price are licensed, the name of the bookmaker and a link to it. Which odds, bookmakers and offers you see is decided by where you are, so that we show you only what is lawful there. We may add betting offers, advertising and sponsored content, and some of our links to bookmakers and other partners are, or may become, affiliate links: if you follow one and open an account, deposit or bet, we may be paid a commission.
What that means for your data: a click on such a link may carry a reference so that the partner knows you came from us; the partner and any network behind it may set cookies on the partner’s site to attribute what you do there to that click; and they may report the outcome back to us as described above. From the moment you arrive on a partner’s site, the partner is responsible for your data under its own policy. We do not hand a bookmaker or advertiser your account details, and we do not tell a partner who you are unless you agree to that separately. We may use what we know about clicks and outcomes to decide which offers and partners to show.
Betting content is for adults. Where the law where you live requires it, we may ask you to confirm or verify your age before showing you offers — in some places through a specialist verification provider — and we use what you give for that purpose alone.
Email and other messages
Service messages. While you hold an account we will email you what running it requires: login codes you ask for, a notice when your address or account changes, security warnings, and notice of material changes to these pages. You cannot opt out of these without closing your account.
Offers and news. Only with your permission, given by ticking the box at signup or on your account page, we send fight-night reminders, news and offers from 848combat and about our partners, bookmakers among them. The box starts empty everywhere; only your own tick puts you on the list, and the tick also confirms you are of legal betting age where you are (18 in the United Kingdom, Europe and Nigeria, 19 in Canada, 21 in the United States, 25 in Uganda). Every such email is sent by us or by a mailing service acting for us, and may contain a tracking pixel or tracked links so that we can see whether it was opened and what was clicked. We do not give a partner your email address for the partner’s own marketing unless you agree to that separately, in a box that names the partner. Every offers email carries an unsubscribe link, and unticking the box on your account page does the same thing; either takes effect at once. Once you have unsubscribed we keep a note of your address so that we do not email you again.
Other channels. If we add push notifications, text messages, in-app messages or notifications about replies and follows, each will be off until you turn it on, and each will have its own switch.
What is public
Your username, country and picture, your comments and the score other members’ votes give them, your fight picks (graded against results as they land), the date you joined, the members you follow and the members who follow you are all public. They appear on your profile page, on the picks page for each card you call and on the fighter pages you post on, search engines may index them, and the picks image for a card can be downloaded by anyone who can see that page. If we add leaderboards, badges, streaks or similar features, your standing on them will be public too. How you voted on any particular comment is not shown to anyone, and your email address is never shown to anyone.
Treat anything you post as permanent-ish: other people may quote, screenshot or archive it before you delete it, and we cannot recall copies they have made. If you would rather not be recognised, choose a username that does not identify you and do not put personal details in your posts.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal data for money. It reaches other organisations in these ways:
- Service providers who process it on our instructions and for our purposes only: hosting and infrastructure; network security and content delivery (every request to the site passes through such a provider, which sees your IP address and the page you asked for the way our own server does); email delivery; email marketing and customer-relationship tools; analytics; customer support and ticketing; payment processing, if we ever charge for anything; age or identity verification, where the law requires it; fraud, abuse and bot detection; and tools, including automated ones, that help us moderate. Each is bound by a contract to protect the data and to use it for nothing of its own. The current list is available on request.
- Partners, advertisers and affiliate networks — the limited click and outcome data described under “Odds, bookmakers, affiliate links and advertising”, and aggregated statistics about our readers that do not identify you. Under some United States state laws the use of advertising and affiliate cookies counts as a “sale” or “sharing” of personal information; where that applies, you can opt out (see “Your rights and choices”).
- Other readers and the public — everything listed under “What is public”.
- Professional advisers — lawyers, accountants, auditors and insurers, where they need it to advise us.
- Authorities and others where the law requires or allows it — to comply with a law, a court order or a lawful request; to enforce our terms; to detect or prevent fraud, abuse or crime; or to protect the rights, property or safety of the site, its members or the public.
- A buyer or successor — if the business, or the part of it that runs the site, is sold, merged, reorganised or financed, your data may be transferred to the new owner or shared with the parties to the deal, who must keep to this policy or tell you before using it differently.
- Anyone you ask us to share it with, or where you otherwise consent.
Where your data goes
The site’s data is currently stored in the European Economic Area, and some of our providers process data in the United States and other countries whose privacy laws differ from those where you live. Where personal data leaves the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area we rely on a safeguard the law recognises: an adequacy decision (including the EU–US and UK–US Data Privacy Framework, where a provider is certified under it), standard contractual clauses or the United Kingdom’s addendum to them, or another lawful mechanism. Details of the safeguard used for a particular transfer are available on request.
How long we keep it
We keep personal data for as long as we need it for the purpose it was collected for, which in practice means:
- Your account and what you posted — for as long as you hold the account. Delete something, or delete your account, and it leaves the site at once; it may remain in backups for a short period until they are overwritten on a rolling basis, and in copies other people or search engines made.
- Your answer to the offers box, and the record of each change to it — for as long as we need to show you agreed if we are ever asked to, and after you unsubscribe a note of your address so that we do not email you again.
- Login codes, sessions and posting records — login codes expire within minutes and are consumed on use; a signup left unfinished expires the same day; a login session lasts a limited time unless you log out; records kept to pace posting and requests are discarded within days.
- Logs and analytics — request logs are kept briefly for operations and security and then discarded; analytics are kept for a limited period and then deleted or reduced to statistics that do not identify anyone.
- Correspondence, reports and records of disputes — for as long as reasonably needed to deal with the matter, and afterwards for as long as a claim could be brought.
- Anything the law requires us to keep — for as long as it requires.
Data that no longer identifies you may be kept and used indefinitely.
Security
We protect personal data with technical and organisational measures appropriate to the risk: encrypted connections, limited and logged access, providers chosen for their own security, and copies kept for recovery. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot promise that nothing will ever go wrong. Because a one-time code sent to your email address is the only way into your account, anyone with access to your inbox can sign in as you: keep it secure, and tell us at once if you think your account has been used by someone else. If a breach affects you, we will tell you and the relevant authority where the law requires it.
Your rights and choices
Things you can do yourself. From your account page you can change your username, country, picture and email address, turn email offers on or off, and delete your account — which removes your profile, comments, votes, picks, follows and your place on the offers list at once. You can delete your own comments where they appear, and unsubscribe from any offers email with the link in it. Where a cookie control is offered you can change your cookie choices there; your browser settings work too.
If you are in the United Kingdom, the European Economic Area or Nigeria, you have the right to ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you (and, where it is practical, in a form you can take elsewhere), to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict how we use it, to object to a use based on our legitimate interests, to object to direct marketing at any time (which we will always honour), to withdraw a consent you have given, and not to be subject to a decision based solely on automated processing that significantly affects you. You may also complain to your data protection authority — in the United Kingdom the Information Commissioner’s Office, in Nigeria the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, elsewhere the authority in the country where you live or where you believe the problem occurred — though we would appreciate the chance to resolve it first.
If you live in a United States state with a privacy law (such as California, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas or Virginia), you may have the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use and share it, to access and delete it, to correct it, to opt out of its sale, of its sharing for cross-context behavioural advertising and of targeted advertising, to limit the use of sensitive personal information (we collect none), and not to be treated differently for exercising these rights. To opt out of sale, sharing or targeted advertising, email us with the subject “Do not sell or share”, use the cookie control where one is offered, or send a Global Privacy Control signal from your browser; where the law recognises an authorised agent, one may act for you. If we decline a request you may appeal by replying to our answer.
Wherever you live, the law may give you similar rights — in Canada, Australia, Brazil and elsewhere — and we will honour them. Write to us at hello@848combat.com from the email address on your account, or tell us enough to verify that you are who you say you are. We answer within a month, extended where a request is complex and we tell you so, and free of charge unless a request is plainly unfounded or excessive. Most of what we ask for is optional; the parts an account cannot work without are an email address, a username and a country.
Age
848combat is for adults. The Terms of Use ask you to be 18 or over to use the site and to hold an account, and before we send you any email offers the box you tick asks you to confirm you are of legal betting age where you live (18 in the United Kingdom, Europe and Nigeria, 19 in Canada, 21 in the United States, 25 in Uganda). Where the legal betting age is higher than 18 we also ask before a bookmaker is shown: in Uganda, where it is 25, a bookmaker is named and linked only once you have confirmed you are 25 or over. That answer is kept in your browser and is not sent to us. These confirmations are the only age questions we ask today, and we do not collect your date of birth; where a law or a partner requires it we may have to verify age before showing certain content or offers, and this page will say so when we do. We do not knowingly hold an account for, or market to, anyone under 18. If you believe someone under 18 has an account, tell us and we will remove it.
Automated decisions and profiling
We do not make decisions about you by automated means alone that have a legal or similarly significant effect. Software does decide, automatically, the order comments are shown in, what is shown where you are, when a request is refused for exceeding a limit, and whether activity looks like abuse; and we may group members by country, by what they follow and by how they use the site so that offers and news are more relevant. You may object to profiling for direct marketing at any time.
Fighters and other people in the public eye
The cards, records, results, statistics, rankings and portraits here concern fighters, officials and others in the public eye. They are compiled from sports data feeds and public reference sources, not collected from you, and they are published in our legitimate interest and the public’s interest in the sport as journalism, reference and opinion. Most faces on the site are illustrations drawn by an AI image model from a reference photograph, made to identify a fighter consistently from page to page. Some fighter pages are built from the public record of an athlete’s bouts alone. The ranked articles are our own reading of that record and our opinion.
If you are a fighter, official or other person named here and something about you is wrong, out of date or should not be here, write to us. We will look into it within a month, correct what is wrong, and consider any request to remove material against the public interest in it and the rights of others, and tell you what we decided.
Other people’s sites
The site links to bookmakers, promotions, reference sites, social platforms and other third parties, and may load some images or embedded content directly from another site’s servers, in which case that site sees your IP address and browser the way any site you visit would. We are not responsible for what any of them collect or do; read their policies before giving them anything.
Changes to this policy
We will change this policy as the site changes, and the date at the top says when we last did. A change that materially affects what we collect, what we do with it or who we share it with will be announced on the site, and to members by email where appropriate, before it takes effect. Where a change needs your consent, we will ask for it.
